Getting ready to head out to see WWE tonight at Hertz Arena...My 2nd passion. I worked on the fringes of the Pro Wrestling business in the 80's & 90's. I did some ring announcing, show promoting, I had a wrestling radio feature that ran daily on WRCN, Long Island, and for a couple of years, I hosted the Wrestling Report Hotline, a 900 phone number that you called for the latest wrestling info. Over the years, I had the pleasure of working with and interviewing guys like Sgt Slaughter, Paul Heyman, Sting, Tony Atlas, Sunny Beach, Johnny Valiant and a bunch more, and I've always found wrestlers the easiest and most "fan-friendly" celebrities to work with.
My "initiation" into the wrestling business was holding the Iranian flag for the legendary Iron Sheik, while he sang the Iranian National Anthem at Comsewogue High School on Long Island, on a packed show that featured a young Mick Foley as Cactus Jack, "Freebird" Michael Hayes, "Gentleman" Chris Adams and the aforementioned Sheik. What a blast, and I got paid $20!!
Wrestling grabbed hold of me at a young age. I've been watching and attending shows since the early 70's. I've attended 7 Wrestlemania's. including the first one, and I was a regular at the monthly shows at Nassau Coliseum and MSG for years. And for years, I dragged my ex-wife (explains a lot...I know) to high schools all over the NY Metropolitan area so I could ring announce in front of a couple hundred people. I LOVED every minute of it...Ok, seeing King Kong Bundy semi-naked in the locker room was a bit tough on the eyes, but other than that, it was a blast. Looking forward to seeing this latest generation of WWE Superstars tonight!!
