The best part of my job is getting to listen to so much great music, both from our local musicians, and from bands around the country and around the world. As I've said countless times, there IS great new music, out there, it's just that you won't find it in the same places that you once found it. But right now, US 41 is playing GREAT new music by bands like Wayland, Patrick James Band, Marcus King Band, Black Keys, Jellyroll. All these songs are reminiscent of the music we grew up with. Easily digestible, and mass appeal.
One thing all these songs have in common. They all clock in at under 4 minutes. Local bands, take heed. If I could criticize one thing about the music I receive from our locals, it's length of the songs. What many bands take 4-5 minutes to say, can usually be said in 3:30 or less. This subject comes up all the time, and while I don't like to edit artists work, there are so many times that a :30 second edit can take a song that borders on the ponderous, and takes it to a place where it is much more palatable for the average listener. Let's remember, attention spans seem to shrink as the days go on, so I always think the best strategy is to state your case quickly and get to the song's strength as quickly as possible.
Next US 41 live event is Saturday July 23rd at Twisted Fork in Pt. Charlotte. We'll begin with a US 41 live broadcast at 1pm, followed by a performance by US 41 favorite "Pacifico" Rik Ferrell. Rik has a single on the station now called "Sunnyland," and in 2021 had the #3 song for the year in "Drunkie's Lament." Rik's music is a lot of fun, and we're very excited to be a part of this show. We've been laying kinda low this Summer, so it'll be great to get out, especially to a place with a great rep like Twisted Fork.
